The Every Stu­dent Suc­ceeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law by Pres­i­dent Oba­ma on Decem­ber 10, 2015. ESSA is a bipar­ti­san mea­sure which reau­tho­rizes the 50-year-old Ele­men­tary and Sec­ondary Edu­ca­tion Law (ESEA), the nation’s K-12 law. Tennessee ESSA State Plan


The Ten­nessee Depart­ment of Edu­ca­tion has put togeth­er resources and guid­ance regard­ing the devel­op­ment of the Ten­nessee draft plan of the Every Stu­dent Suc­ceeds Act. TDOE con­tin­ues to share infor­ma­tion regard­ing their pro­gress on the ESSA time­line, and con­tin­ues solic­it­ing feed­back from com­mu­ni­ty mem­bers and stake­hold­ers.

TN Educational Equity Coalition ESSA Action


The Ten­nessee Edu­ca­tion­al Equi­ty Coali­tion has been involved in the Ten­nessee process for draft­ing the state plan of the Every Stu­dent Suc­ceeds Act since ear­ly in 2016. Coali­tion mem­bers form part of state appoint­ed work­ing groups that have met over the course of sev­er­al months to provide feed­back on the devel­op­ment of the plan. Addi­tion­al­ly, Coali­tion mem­bers engage with the Depart­ment and elect­ed offi­cials to provide com­mu­ni­ty feed­back from across the state.
