The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is a key priority for the Tennessee Educational Equity Coalition, and has provided us with an opportunity to work with the Tennessee State Board of Education as they develop the state plan. We believe this landmark legislation provides great promise to fulfill the civil rights aims of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965; it also provides needed framework to ensure the needs of all Tennessee students are met, and that schools and districts are held accountable for their achievement.
Along with having Coalition members serving on the Tennessee Department of Education ESSA working groups, hosting Secretary of Education John King for an ESSA roundtable, and submitting comments to the U.S. Department of Education on the Proposed ESSA Rulemaking Guidance, The Tennessee Educational Equity Coalition has recently submitted letters to both Senator Lamar Alexander and Tennessee Education Commissioner Candice McQueen.
The Tennessee Educational Equity Coalition wrote the letters to express our shared commitment to continuing strong accountability for all schools, ensuring access to high quality teaching, and equitable access to resources and supports for students and schools.
