Notes from the Legislature — Committees Begin

  • Last week… House and Sen­ate com­mit­tee meet­ings began. 
    • The House Edu­ca­tion Com­mit­tee heard pre­sen­ta­tions by the State Col­lab­o­ra­tive on Reform­ing Edu­ca­tion (SCORE) and the TN Depart­ment of Edu­ca­tion gave an assess­ment update.
    • In the Sen­ate Edu­ca­tion Com­mit­tee, pre­sen­ta­tions were given by the Ten­nessee High­er Edu­ca­tion Com­mis­sion (THEC) on the State of High­er Edu­ca­tion and by the Inter­im Pres­i­dent of the Uni­ver­si­ty of Ten­nessee, Randy Boyd.
  • This week… The House and Sen­ate bill fil­ing dead­li­nes are Wednes­day and Thurs­day, respec­tive­ly. More bills will begin to make their way through the com­mit­tee sys­tem in upcom­ing weeks. 
    • New Edu­ca­tion Com­mis­sion­er, Dr. Pen­ny Schwinn will intro­duce her­self in the House Edu­ca­tion Com­mit­tee meet­ing this Wednes­day. The com­mit­tee will also be vis­it­ed by Dr. Sharon Griffin from Achieve­ment School Dis­trict.
    • SCORE and the Depart­ment of Edu­ca­tion will give pre­sen­ta­tions in Sen­ate Edu­ca­tion Com­mit­tee this week.
